I am puzzled by constat references to Belarus as a 'dictatorship' or even 'the last dictatorship of Europe'. Those of us old enough to remember will recall that there were real military dictatorships inside NATO. In Greece, more than 20 students were shot dead during an anti-government demo in 1973. NATO said and did nothing. Portugal was a military dictatorship and in Turkey there was a military coup in 1980 followed by a brutal crackdown. 75,000 were imprisoned. In General Franco's Spain even the mildest critics would face immediate imprisonment.Spain was not in NATO but the US was cozying up to Franco who offered military bases in gratitude to US support. The hypocrisy that surrounds Belarus is truly breathtaking.
